As the weather changes, so does your skin. With the extra heat and humidity, we actually produce more sebum (oils), resulting in oily-feeling skin. But we have the perfect skincare solution for you! Clay masks such as our Detox and Soothe are perfect for drawing out oil and dirt while maintaining healthy, glowy skin - so you can keep your skin clean and enjoy the sun!

But how do clay masks actually work, especially on different skin types? Let’s dive deeper into how clay masks can fit into your summer routine!

Science Behind Clay Masks Cleaning Your Skin

French Green Clay, also known as Illite, is the key ingredient to clear the skin. Sourced from natural silico-aluminum deposits in France, this clay’s structure and mineral makeup can give what’s called a “high cation exchange reaction”. This means that molecules of the clay can reach depths of the skin like none other once mixed with water.

The actual cleaning immediately happens when Illite molecules contact your skin. As the clay sits on the skin and dries up, impurities on your skin are lifted and eliminated by the minerals in the mask. This reaction leaves the skin feeling cleansed, clarified, and balanced within minutes.

So, along with washing off the clay mask, you have effectively removed the dirt, oil, and bacteria from your skin. Goodbye breakouts and excess oils!

How Three Ships Can Help

If you’re looking for how Detox can integrate into your summer skincare routine - we’ve got you.
Here’s a basic outline of products we use to compliment clay masks and seize summer days:

  1. Cleanse with our Purify Aloe + Amino Acid Cleanser
  2. Deep clean and maintain glow with our Detox Green Tea Antioxidant Clay Mask
  3. Moisturize with our Radiance Grape Stem Cell + Squalane Day Cream (will be back in stock soon!)
  4. Restore elasticity and repair with our Boost 49% Rosehip Oil Serum

For oily / acne-prone / combination skin:
We recommend double-cleansing your face if you have oily, acne-prone, and/or combination skin - you can read more about double-cleansing here or check out The Double Cleanse Bundle. Accordingly, the mask is best applied every three days!

For dry skin:
If you have dry skin, your skin can benefit from an emollient such as oil-based serums for more hydration. Learn more about how serums work here, or take a look at our serums. It is best to start off using clay masks as a weekly treatment to effectively observe its results on your skin!

For sensitive skin / fine lines:

We recommend using our Soothe Rosehip Vitamin C Clay Mask if you have sensitive skin and/or are looking to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Soothe contains French pink clay which is the mildest of all clays. Its rosehip extract provides high amounts of Vitamin C, helping to promote skin elasticity and maintain skin suppleness!
